Dear Professor,

We are sorry for bothering you. We would like to introduce ourself to you. We are from Sumedang Student Association for Communications and Media Studies. One of our aims is to facilitate our members to get literature in our discipline. Because, you must to know it, in our region (Sumedang City) books are in a very lacked conditions. Sumedang regency is a remote place in Java Island. Our University is Sebelas April University.

But in our shortages, we try to intensify our studies by holding a group discussion. We have a group discussion, that is Sumedang Student Association for Communications and Media Studies. We have an initiative for getting a help for books’ donation from abroad, because we know that it is very difficult to get books donation in Indonesia, especially in english version.

We are very grateful if you could donate us books for our studies. we are now trying for building up a small library for our association. We are interested in the themes of COMMUNICATION THEORY, MASS COMMUNICATION, MASS MEDIA, ADVERTISING, JOURNALISM, PUBLIC REALTIONS and other MEDIA STUDIES books.

We are very hopely for your donations, because the books will be very important and useful for helping us in getting knowledge more.

Film scholar Murray Pomerance explores our fascination with Johnny
Depp, his riddling complexity, and his meaning for our culture. The actor’s
image is studied in terms of its many strange nuances: Depp’s ethnicity,
his smoking, his tranquility, his unceasing motion, his links to the Gothic,
the Beats, Simone de Beauvoir, the history of rationality, Impressionist
painting, and other ambiguities. Both deeply intriguing and perpetually
elusive, Depp is revealed as the central screen performer of the
contemporary age, the symbol of performance itself.

Murray Pomerance, a professor in the department of
sociology at Ryerson University, is the author of An Eye for Hitchcock,
Magia D’Amore, Johnny Depp Starts Here, and winner of an O. Henry short story award.

The IPFW Writing Center, located in KT G19, is open Monday-Friday, as well as Sunday. It offers all writers free one-on-one help in writing papers for any class. Students may come at any stage of the writing process. Appointments are required; to sign up for a consultation, sign up via Tutor Trac at http://www.ipfw.edu/casa/wc/default.htm. You should bring your syllabus and assignment to your consultation. The Writing Center also offers online consulting, free handouts, and workshops on a variety of topics. Washington, DC | Decmber 7, 2006 | The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination
Committee (ADC) is now accepting applications for the 2007 Jack G. Shaheen Mass
Communications Scholarship. Jack G. Shaheen, PhD, is the world’s foremost
authority on media images of Arab and the author of Reel Bad Arabs, Arab and
Muslim Stereotyping in American Popular Culture, Nuclear War Films, and The TV
Arab. He established this scholarship through ADC to recognize Arab-American
students who excel in media studies. The deadline for applications is April 16,
2007, and recipients of the scholarship will be announced and presented at ADC’s
Annual Convention

JACK G. SHAHEEN MASS COMMUNICATIONS SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION INFORMATION

PURPOSE:
To recognize Arab-American students who excel in Media Studies.

AWARD AMOUNT:
$1000

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
Juniors, Seniors, or Graduate Students

Must be attending college in the 2007-08 academic year.

Must be majoring in Mass Communications, Journalism, Radio, Television, and/or
Film

Must have at least a 3.0 GPA and be a U.S. citizen of Arab heritage

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS–DEADLINE: APRIL 16, 2007:
Applicants should send the following to the ADC Research Institute:

A one-page statement stating that you are a US citizen, explaining your goals
and why you merit the scholarship

Copies of articles, videos, films, etc.

Withers Scholarships

Withers Scholarships provide full tuition for one year for academically deserving (GPA of 3.3 plus) students. The number of scholarships awarded depends on how well the stock market has done this past year. Information and an application form is on the Department of History website. Upcoming Women’s and Gender Studies Conference

The following email is from Linda Fox, director of the Women’s Studies Program at IPFW:

It is my pleasure to announce that IPFW’s Women’s Studies Program is the host for the 19th annual “Celebrating Our Students” all – IU Undergraduate Women’s and Gender Studies Conference. We hope to have students from all 8 campuses and some faculty as well. The one-day conference will be Friday April 13th from about 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will include a keynote by Layli Miller Muro, who helped champion the first successful legal case based on gender asylum in the US, a continental breakfast and buffet lunch, and a closing theatre piece, in addition to several rounds of concurrent sessions around the theme of “The Global Community of Women.” This theme is broad enough to allow for a wide variety of research or creative work by your students, and I hope as you read and evaluate term papers and projects, you will identify the best ones and recommend that the students participate in our conference.

We will have an on-line submission form and a link to the conference information from the Women’s Studies page, beginning in late January. Deadline for submissions will be March 3 (just before spring break). It is particularly helpful to identify students from this semester since many will not have a completed project or paper by early March from the spring 2007 semester. Please ask your students to see me for more details.
I hope that the IPFW contingent of presenters will be large, since we are the host campus this time and do not have to travel!

Please help to make this a most memorable conference by encouraging your best students to contribute!

SoapU College Soap Opera Contest

Welcome to the Envy League. SOAPnet is pleased to announce open enrollment for SoapU this fall! Original soap operas have been running for years on campuses across the country and SOAPnet is offering your students real-world experience in one of entertainment’s most fast-paced genres with its SoapU College Soap Opera Contest.

Students who fulfill all entry requirements as outlined in the Official Rules may submit up to 10 minutes of original footage related to the soap opera genre to SoapU from October 16th through December 31st, 2006 to get started. One grand prize winner will receive a trip to LA and an opportunity to pitch original programming ideas to SOAPnet and SOAPNETIC as well as a budget of approximately $20,000* to produce a piece of original content for SOAPNETIC, SOAPnet’s broadband video platform.
